Avaya is committed to leaving the environment the same or better than when we found it.

As a leading global provider of next-generation business collaboration and communications solutions, Avaya is proud to help our customers reduce harmful impacts on the environment by curtailing energy consumption, traveling less and minimizing electronic waste through BYOD (bring your own device) technologies.

Product Design & Recycling Compliance

It is our corporate Environmental Health and Safety Policy to “integrate environmental, health, and safety considerations into our products and services throughout their life cycle.” Therefore, Avaya continually evaluates opportunities to minimize waste and maximize efficiency in its product design, delivery, use and disposal. Avaya has adopted Design for Environment (DfE) product guidelines to ensure products are compliant with international regulations and environmental requirements in all jurisdictions where we do business. For example, we monitor for substance restrictions, such as those identified by RoHS and REACH, and participate in end of life (recycling and disposal) program requirements such as WEEE. Third party materials used in Avaya products are also evaluated to confirm compliance.

Reduce Packaging

Over the past several years, Avaya has increased efficiencies by packing and shipping products to customers with less waste. To date, we have:

  • Replaced most instruction booklets and CDs/DVDs with a single, multi-language information sheet that provides customers with the Avaya Support website URL, Support phone numbers and regulatory requirements.
  • Labeled packaging with recycling markings, per international standards.
  • Prohibited the use of PVC and thermoset plastics in packaging. Not environmentally friendly, PVC releases a dioxin when burned, and thermoset plastics are difficult to recycle. As a result, all of our packaging is identified as “recyclable'.
  • Redesigned our packaging to reduce material use, increase shipping densities and reduce logistics costs.

Avaya Operations

Articulated in the Environmental, Health, and Safety Policy and Guiding Principles, Avaya will “protect and conserve our natural resources by minimizing wastes, managing energy use responsibly, and employing pollution prevention principles.” Avaya seeks to enhance efficiency throughout our business, knowing that both the resources required to make our products and services, such electricity to power our office buildings, and the wastes we generate, such as greenhouse gas emissions, have direct costs and impacts on the environment.

Goal: Reduce Carbon Footprint 15 percent by 2015

In 2009, Avaya committed to reducing its carbon footprint 15 percent by 2015.  Annual progress toward this target is reported through the Carbon Disclosure Project.  Our footprint includes the electricity and fuel used to power facilities owned and leased by Avaya and business travel.  Avaya has selected a third party enterprise carbon management system to track and monitor our greenhouse gas emissions, and quickly and efficiently present results.  In 2012, the Environmental Protection Agency recognized Avaya with a Goal Setting Certificate for its excellence in greenhouse gas management.
