Avaya Scopia Provides Comfort to Families through Its Seamless Conferencing Service

GENEVA— December 13, 2016– In order to offer its patients unparalleled care, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Geneva University Hospitals (Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genève, or HUG) has implemented the Avaya Scopia video conferencing system from Avaya, a global leader in business communications software, systems and services. The system enables mothers and families to watch over their premature babies, an opportunity which helps to provide comfort at such a critical stage of life.

Offering video conferencing for families is not a new concept for HUG. However, their previous system consisted of only one pair of laptops (one for each side of the call), which led to difficulties when new users had to familiarize with the functionalities. At such a difficult and emotional time for families, having to wrench their focus away from their babies was an integral factor behind deciding to switch to a new video conferencing system. In addition, mothers are often discharged before their babies, and a lack of contact makes such a sensitive time even more stressful.

Since the installation of Avaya Scopia, families have been able to watch their babies in the Neonatal Unit in real-time. While it may seem a small gesture, these sort of actions make all the difference for those having to go through the ICU experience. The system is a simplified, agile infrastructure, which is scalable, cost-effective and ideal for facilities spanning a range of sizes. The seamless integration enables staff to focus exclusively on patient care without having to spend their precious time dealing with technical issues. In addition to creating positive patient experiences, Avaya’s software is changing the way medical staff at the facility are trained by enabling off-site specialist doctors to be reached more directly.
