The Importance of Gender-Neutral Language

In celebration of LGBTQIA+ Pride Month, we feel it important to increase awareness of gender-neutral language and reinforce a sense of belonging for everyone in our organization.
Displaying + Respecting Pronouns
According to the Diversity Center of Northeast Ohio, “Pronouns are the way that we refer to people in place of their name or in third person (referring to that person while talking to someone else). When someone shares their pronouns, it's an indication of how they would like to be referred to in the third person. Often, pronouns have an implied gender, such as “he” to refer to a man or “she” to refer to a woman. People may make assumptions about the gender of a person based upon their appearance or their name. In both cases, these assumptions aren’t always correct, accurate, or helpful. In fact, these messages can be harmful and damaging to relationships.

What we say and how we say it is foundational to creating an inclusive culture within our workplace. Inclusive language demonstrates that we respect, value and support individuals. It creates a sense of belonging as individual identities are reflected in daily communication, with inclusive language becoming the norm. It activates people to speak up when they experience exclusionary behavior. Language is also fluid. Meanings and connotations of words can change rapidly, so it's important to apply inclusive principles across all organizational communications.1
