Changing the World, One Desktop at a Time

You’ve likely heard the name Malala Yousafzai – I blogged about her last year when Avaya announced its Devices for Diversity campaign. Her story impacted me and inspired me to my core. Today, I want to tell you about Roja.

Roja has a different story. She’s five years old and lives in Cambodia. She hasn’t made headlines like Malala, but she is every bit as important. She’s a student at her village’s Save the Children early childhood development center. This is significant because, in Cambodia, nearly 23% of children aren’t enrolled in school, and 52 out of every 1,000 girls becomes an adolescent mother. The power of education is making a difference for Roja and setting her up for success. The program that Save the Children has established in her village will give Roja a chance at a quality education, which we know is key to realizing global equality.

Save the Children continues to do incredible work around the globe to advance equality through its Girls Educational Programming. Every dollar donated to the program helps educate girls who may not otherwise have the chance to learn—changing the course of their lives, their children’s lives, and the future of their communities.

When Avaya rolled out its Devices for Diversity program last year, we knew that giving back to Girls Educational Programming was the perfect fit. During the last three months of 2018, for every one of our multimedia devices that sold, a contribution was set aside for the charity. The campaign leveraged the diversity of the award-winning Avaya Vantage™ multimedia devices portfolio to increase awareness around the need for more diversity in the workplace: both in the workforce and in communication tools. I’m thrilled to report that the results are in, and Avaya has made a $20,000 donation to Save the Children to help more girls like Roja.

This isn’t the end of our story. Avaya’s Devices for Diversity campaign is just one way we’re advancing a diverse, inclusive global workforce with a culture of belonging that leverages the backgrounds and perspectives of all employees, customers, partners, and communities to cultivate a higher performing organization. With the success of our first campaign under our belts, we have plans to write another chapter soon and continue to give back in significant ways.
