Team Communication is Critical for Champion Adventure Racing Team Avaya

On your marks. Get set. Go! The Adventure Racing World Series (ARWS) is on…and Avaya is in! Team Avaya will be led by the inspiring, five-time adventure racing world champion Nathan Fa’avae. Nathan and his new-look team of elite athletes Jo Williams, Chris Forne, and Stuart Lynch are geared up and ready to go! Team Avaya is touted as New Zealand’s most successful adventure racing team, which is a huge honor in a grueling sport fueled by adventure, perseverance, and teamwork.

When it comes to thriving in a team setting, Avaya knows all about how critical it is to have world-class team communication. A multi-disciplinary, ultra-endurance team sport, adventure racing involves trekking, mountain biking, paddling and navigation through hundreds of miles of unmarked wilderness over the course of four-seven days. There are problem-solving challenges in every race, which can be related to weather, gear failure, navigation errors, and so on. So, team communication is critical and has always been at the heart of what it takes to not only endure but thrive—and win! A team that communicates effectively will save time and enjoy better outcomes.

One Step Ahead

#TeamAvaya, currently ranked #1 in New Zealand and #1 in the world, competes with the motto “race like champions.” This winning team strives to stay one step ahead, just as “Business Team Avaya” does. In a fast-paced, innovating world, Avaya is no stranger to staying one step ahead of the competition. When it comes to thriving in a team setting, Avaya knows all about what it takes to provide world-class team communication. For the racers and our employees alike, flexible, mobile communication tools are an essential tool as teammates exchange emails, phone and video calls to get things organized and prepped.

About the Race

To reach the #arworldseries, teams must compete in qualifying races across the globe: Expedition Africa, Expedición Guaraní, Huairasinchi, Itera Expedition Race, Maya Mtn Adventure, Nordic Islands AR, Raid in France, Raid Gallaecia, Shenandoah Tough, XPD Expedition Race, and Xtrail Expedition. Each course is a unique journey. The top two finishing teams in each event secure the opportunity to compete in the World Championships with additional spots awarded to reigning world champions, who are given the right to defend their title, and a selection of wild card entrants.

As the Qualifying Race approaches in Altay, Team Avaya is on site and ramping up for go time. The Altay region is culturally and geographically diverse and interesting which should make for an interesting expedition. Team captain Fa’avae paints a picture, “we arrived yesterday and there is more snow in the mountains than we expected to see, so it’s quite a bit colder. We’re expecting some cold nights in the race. We have some desert stages, so keeping sand out of everything is a big challenge!”

And while it’s critical to be safe and perform to the best of their ability, Fa’avae is also looking forward to enjoying and exploring Reunion Island this year.

Upcoming Races for Team Avaya

  • Qualifying Race (XTRAIL Expedition): June 3 – 9, 2018 across Altay, Xinjiang, China
The iconic Altay region, not normally accessible to tourists, stretches across unique grasslands, lakes, and mountains from Kazakhstan and Russia in the northwest to Mongolia in the northeast. The exact course is kept secret until 24hrs before the start.
  • Championship Race (ARWS): November 5 – 16, 2018 across Reunion Island, France
Reunion Island is a French Overseas Territory located in the Indian Ocean (near the islands of Madagascar and Maurice) covering 2,523 square kilometers. Ceremonies and events leading up to the race are hosted at the Village de Corail.

It’s adaptability that crafts a champion. Fa’avae says, “The different races making up the World Series differ in terrain and climates. Some countries can be very mountainous, others flat and plain. Some races it’s the cold that we need to be wary of, other races the heat is what we need to manage. It’s the extremes that create the contrasts.”

We believe the sport really epitomizes the endurance, teamwork and always-on performance it takes to be the best in the world. Adventuring Racing is also symbolic of the transformation journey organizations face today. Both require speed and agility, strength and flexibility, alignment and dedication—and some serious grit.

Avaya’s innovative solutions are also world champions in revolutionizing communications and bringing together and mobilizing teams around the globe. We are here, with our customers through every step through the ups and downs of their transformation journey, to deliver incredible experiences and incredible outcomes—in record time. It’s all about being fit, strong, and a good team player, and at Avaya, we are all in!
