Avaya Government Solutions Delivers Unified Communications to Ensure ‘Always-On, Always-Available’ Care for Veterans
United Voice and Data System Enables Constant Contact
For Immediate Release:27 Jul 2010
FAIRFAX, VA. – Avaya Government Solutions, a wholly owned subsidiary of Avaya, today announced the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE) Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Center at National Naval Medical Center has deployed an end-to-end Unified Communications (UC) network that enables the communications needed in the care of veterans that have sustained brain injuries as a result of their service.
“This technology will greatly benefit our wounded warriors on their path to recovery and we are grateful to Avaya for their generosity and support,” said Martin Edelman, Trustee of the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. “As Americans, we are obligated to provide the very best research, care and treatment we can to ensure our men and women in uniform get the services they need.”
The unified voice and data system delivers communications in a manner that is most beneficial to the mission of NICoE. Video-teleconferencing and telemedicine ensure the very best practitioners can be contacted and if necessary, assist with particularly complicated procedures. It allows doctors to see very large data files, such as X-ray or MRI results via the best platform available. Previously, doctors had to visually inspect the actual hardcopies of the results, but can now see them via their smart phone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer in sufficient resolution to determine next steps. Voice communications, streaming video and audio, as well as other real-time media can be shared instantly, with no delay or latency from buffering or other hang-ups that afflict competing UC solutions.
“Unified Communications are a powerful tool in the hands of the medical community,” said Joel Hackney, president, Avaya Government Solutions. “A scalpel is only as effective as the doctor that wields it. With the right information at the right time in the right place, that doctor – and by extension, any member of the healthcare community – is transformed into a very powerful healer, imbued with the latest and greatest knowledge for the specific task at hand. Partnering with NICoE is an honor, especially given their noble mission of helping this nation’s veterans.”
NICoE communications are rated carrier class via the Avaya Aura™ Application Server 5300, which provides the capability for a JITC-certified secure, mission critical and standards-based Unified Communications solution. Polycom provided the infrastructure for high-definition video-teleconferencing and teleconferencing capabilities with their HDX and RDX suite of products. The Avaya solution supports voice telephony from IP-enabled products from the Communication Server 1000 portfolio. Avaya Data Solutions products from the Avaya 8000-series provide 10/100/1000 edge support as well as 10G connectivity, and enable very high-bandwidth operations (such as sharing HD digital imagery of Computer Tomography scans and X-rays).
T-Metrics also provided a JITC-certified automated call distribution (ACD) solution to enhance the existing voice architecture. The TM-2000 IP-Based ACD platform affords patients with the swift, responsive care that these veteran’s deserve by targeting callers’ needs using an interactive menu and delivering the patient to the healthcare professional best suited to handle their requests. The TM-2000 also furnishes the National Naval Medical Center with metrics that may be used to further track staffing and telecommunications expansion needs.
“It really is gratifying to give back to a community that has given so much to all of us. Many take the contribution of our veterans for granted, but Avaya Government Solutions will continue to make every effort to support this community,” said Joe Rogers, vice president of Defense, Avaya Government Solutions. “This is but one proof-point of a greater focus of Avaya, and that is to provide UC systems across the spectrum of government entities that are designed to enable our public officials to recognize and more importantly, prioritize information to serve their communities.”

About the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund
The Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the men and women of the United States Armed Forces and their families. Established in 2000, the Fund continues an effort begun in 1982 by Intrepid Museum Foundation founders Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher, who, between 1982 and 1999, made contributions of between $10,000 and $25,000 to the families of hundreds of military personnel lost in performance of their duty. These gifts were intended to assist these families through any financial hardships that might follow the loss of their loved ones. Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher personally funded this effort until Zachary's passing in 1999, at which time members of his family took on this effort and personally funded continuing contributions to military families. Following September 11, 2001 and the onset of military operations in Afghanistan, the Fishers determined that all Americans should join in this effort to support the families of our fallen heroes. The Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund was established as a program of the Intrepid Museum Foundation, and became an independent non-profit organization in 2003. Through 2005, IFHF distributed more than $14 million to military families. New legislation enacted in May 2005 has significantly increased the death gratuity and the Service Members Group Life Insurance support to these families. At that time the Fund redirected its efforts to support the catastrophically disabled military personnel and their families. In January 2007 the Fund opened the center for the Intrepid, a $55 million rehabilitation facility for troops suffering amputation and severe burn injuries. The Center is located at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. The NICoE project is the latest effort of the Fund to support those who have served and sacrificed in defense of our nation.
