Avaya (NYSE: AV), a global leader in corporate networking solutions and services and a sponsor of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup™, today announced that the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) has selected an Avaya Wireless Local Area Network (wLAN) solution for its campus.

AIT, an international post-graduate institution established in 1959, is installing an advanced wireless network based on products from the Avaya wLAN portfolio. The system will include 63 Avaya RG-1 Residential Gateways. Access points strategically located throughout the AIT campus in academic buildings, classrooms, the library, and auditoriums will give students fast, reliable and convenient access to the wLAN from their notebooks or PDAs. Up to 2,000 users will be able to connect simultaneously. Other than the wireless link, AIT students, faculty and staff will be able to connect to the campus network and Internet from every dormitory room and every staff residence on campus through a Gigabit Ethernet and Long Reach Ethernet (LRE) connection.

The Avaya RG-1 Residential Gateway provides robust, high-bandwidth communications over great distances at data rates of up to 11Mbps. A built-in Network Address Translation router with Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol enables all users to share Internet access. The RG-1 adheres to the IEEE 802.11b (Wi-Fi compliant) WIFI certified standard, including the Wired Equivalency Privacy algorithm (WEP) to provide high levels of security.

The Avaya Wireless PC Card makes wireless networking a practical reality. It slides directly into laptop PCs and can also be used in desktop PCs with an Avaya adaptor. The Avaya Wireless PC card can provide transmission at 11Mbps and interoperates with any industry-standard 802.11b transceiver.

Avaya wLANs have been widely deployed in universities throughout the world. In the Asia Pacific region, this includes the University of Tokyo, Peking University, Hong Kong University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.
