Avaya has a number of programs in place (described below) to enable our employees and partners to live a more sustainable life.  We believe that these programs and initiatives help Avaya and its customers reduce their real estate costs and carbon footprint while maintaining or perhaps increasing productivity.
 
Virtual Office/ Telework capabilities
 
Avaya‘s Unified Communication solutions make teleworking and telecommuting easy and productive, leading to improved customer service and real cost savings.  Our solutions empower teleworkers by seamlessly delivering headquarters communications capabilities wherever people work.  Avaya deploys these solutions as part of its ‘Avaya by Example’ program.  As of January 2010, Avaya had approximately 13% of the employee base working exclusively via virtual offices.  Furthermore, in a survey conducted in 2008, we found that 46 % of our employees worked from home at least once a week.  Beyond these statistics, a high percentage of remaining employees are enabled to use these tools as required, which we believe increases productivity and work/ life balance. 
 
Based on Avaya‘s Eco Friendly Green Calculator, we estimate that each employee who works from home one day a week, avoids approximately 25Km of driving and saves approximately 325KWh of electricity, 89 litter of gas, and reduces CO2 by approximately 0.35 ton on an annual basis. 
 
Digital Communications
 
Avaya associates have access to Avaya‘s Web Conferencing (AWC) and audio conferencing bridges.  Audio conferencing is set up to provide on-demand conferences, whereby associates access web conferences on a first-come first-serve basis.  The audio bridge conferences can be accessed via a landline, a mobile phone or Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) based soft client.  When audio bridge conference is used in association with AWC, it allows Avaya‘s associates to speak, listen, view and share documents (such as excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, contracts, proposals etc.) in real-time from remote locations from around the world.  These tools provide an effective alternative to travelling for face-to face meetings.

 
Local Green Teams
 
Finally, Avaya is empowering employees around the globe with the opportunity to channel their energy and passion for the environment with fellow enthusiasts at their specific local sites via Green Teams.  Local green teams consist of cross-functional groups of peers who partner together to make operations at their locations run more efficiently, while also providing resources to help their colleagues work and live greener. 
 
Green teams offer a meaningful way for employees to contribute to both Avaya and their broader communities, striking a nice balance globally and locally. Currently, Avaya has green teams in action in EMEA, Asia and North America, with more coming online and getting up to speed at their locations
 
An example of a local green team in action comes from the Westminster, CO Green Team, which has reduced lighting in public areas such as mailrooms and printer rooms and worked to have motion sensors added in bathrooms to reduce electrical consumption and carbon footprint.
