On behalf of Avaya’s approximately 15,000 employees around the world, my sincerest greetings to the people of Nortel Enterprise Solutions. 
 
As you have seen, today Nortel and Avaya separately announced that Avaya has signed agreements to purchase Nortel’s enterprise solutions business.  As exciting as today’s announcement is, far more exciting is what it could lead to:  an enterprise communications company that would bring the best of both Nortel and Avaya to its customers, partners, suppliers and employees. 
 
At Avaya, we have been energetically transforming our company to capture significant growth opportunities in the enterprise market, with extremely good results to date.  I am proud to say that we are financially healthy.  We are an industry leader, and we continue to execute well on our go-to-market strategy.  We have a dynamic executive team with significant depth and breadth including extensive integration and acquisition experience. 
 
Nortel Enterprise Solutions would both complement and enhance our capabilities.  Integrating the businesses post-closing would increase our global scale, expand our customer base, strengthen our channel ecosystem and accelerate innovation, especially in the area of open standards.  We believe customers would enjoy a smooth product migration path and protection of their technology investment, with a “wrap and extend” approach.  We would welcome Nortel partners into the Avaya program, and your customers could retain existing partner relationships and support.  Perhaps most important, the talent and expertise of Nortel employees would make Avaya’s outstanding team even stronger.  In short, I believe this would be a terrific company to do business with, and a terrific company to work for.
 
I believe that today’s announcement can serve as a strong first step in eliminating any uncertainty or questions related to the Nortel enterprise communications business, particularly for employees and customers, the heart of any organization.  At the same time, I recognize that many questions remain.  If this process moves forward smoothly and successfully, as we enthusiastically hope it will, those important questions will be considered thoughtfully and answered as quickly as possible. 
 
For now, I hope that you will spend some time on our web site to get a sense of who we are and who we are positioned and determined to become.  I wish you the best in the weeks ahead, and I personally commit to doing everything I can as we move through the process to support a positive and mutually successful outcome.
