NOVOSIBIRSK METRO'S DATA NETWORK IMPROVED USING AVAYA FABRIC CONNECT

Novosibirsk Metro is the underground transportation system in the city of Novosibirsk. The Avaya network solution was deployed in record time, at minimal cost and is increasing the effectiveness and safety of one of Russia's largest subways.

Goal: Zero Downtime

The main task set by the Novosibirsk Metro was to improve its data transmission system to achieve zero downtime for the subway's IT infrastructure in any situation, even in an emergency. One of the objectives was to reduce time and financial costs to ensure the efficient use of the network.

Safety First

Due to the special aspects of this kind of enterprise, the operation of a large city's subway involves increased risks related both to the technologies used and the way they are used. For any public carrier, one of the most important tasks is to ensure the safety of its passengers. The Novosibirsk Metro had automated process management systems, security systems, and video surveillance systems in place for many years. Over time, the existing network infrastructure could no longer meet the bandwidth requirements for these services and considerable repair expenses were incurred when individual nodes failed. Migration to Ethernet, the conventional technology, could meet neither the convergence-time and fault-tolerance requirements nor the requirements related to optimizing the costs of operating the network. This was due to the complexity of the network topology and the need to integrate network components based on equipment from different vendors.

A radically new solution was needed, one that could help facilitate the uninterrupted operation of the subway’s IT infrastructure even when individual nodes failed. They also needed to minimize the costs related with administration and maintenance while maintaining a high level of safety.

Avaya, a company that has earned the reputation of a reliable provider of networking hardware and that has vast experience in complex infrastructure-related projects, was the natural choice.

Simplified Implementation

After the communication channels at all Novosibirsk Metro stations were modernized, the network core was replaced in the sections between stations and in the administrative building, and a station-level aggregation was partially implemented, using Avaya Fabric Connect.

The Avaya Fabric Connect technology, part of Avaya's family of network solutions, is an extended implementation of the Shortest Path Bridging standard (IEEE 802.1aq). This technology does not require configuration to transfer packets from one physical device to the next on every intermediate device in the network. Abstracted from the physical layer, network services are presented as unified processes.

Instead of providing a multitude of protocols, which may make network administration a complex task, the new solution from Avaya creates a single virtual management level for the entire network. By using a single protocol, IS-IS, Avaya Fabric Connect substitutes one protocol for the entire set of conventional protocols, which dramatically changes the methodology of configuration and resource allocation.

Underground Success

Avaya’s state-of-the-art solutions and Fabric Connect technology implemented by the business partner Computer and Networks, has proved to be a cost effective and reliable solution. The installation, which was done in record time, has provided a unique distributed data transmission system bringing the subway’s IT infrastructure up to specified requirements:

  • By eliminating points of failure at all levels of the network and ensuring a very high convergence rate, the reliability and uptime of the network has been improved significantly.
  • By employing automatic load balancing and using all the fiber-optic channels available in parallel, the operation of the entire network has been made more effective.
  • A foundation has been laid for the flexible and fast deployment of fully independent virtual services (video surveillance, VoIP, LAN interconnection, etc.).
  • Routine network administration and maintenance costs have been cut, and the rate of failures caused by network administration mistakes made due to the complex topology and architecture of the network has also been reduced.

With a total length of 2,145 m (approximately 7,037 ft.), which includes a river section of 896 m (just under 3,000 ft.), Novosibirsk's subway bridge over the Ob River, between the stations Studencheskaya and Rechnoy Vokzal, is the longest subway bridge in the world.
