Improving medical diagnostics through Avaya’s video solutions

In modern healthcare, location is no longer a barrier to getting the best possible treatment. A specialist in a particular condition can be part of a team diagnosing, and even operating, on a patient in a hospital hundreds of miles away, thanks to advanced video collaboration. Working as part of a virtual team, they can see high quality images including x-rays and ultrasounds, and offer diagnostic and surgical advice to those present.

To take advantage of this possibility, more and more hospitals are building ‘ interventional rooms’ – larger theatres equipped with a wide range of technology where heart, vascular and neuroradiological patients can be treated using minimally invasive procedures, as an alternative to conventional surgery. Doctors make extensive use of video to help them reach the correct diagnosis: reviewing and sharing x-ray images and ultrasounds (intra-arterial and vascular), and even creating three-dimensional reconstructions of an artery, on a separate screen. They can then manipulate these reconstructions, and consider alternative treatment options. It’s an incredibly advanced use of both medical and video technology, and one that specialist healthcare solution provider Med&home is at the forefront of.

Med&home has recently launched a new product, called viewLAB, specifically for interventional rooms. viewLAB centralises all the available video signals in a single room, it can then distribute images live to other rooms in the hospital or to other locations, via the Internet. That means large groups can follow the various steps in the intervention in an auditorium onsite, or members of the virtual team can watch remotely.

The viewLAB solution can also record the entire live intervention, so that doctors can later access and review the videos and use them at conferences and to train future professionals.

Challenges

  • Incorporating an advanced videoconferencing solution into a complex healthcare product.
  • Enabling third parties not present in the interventional rooms to participate interactively.
  • Making the solution accessible from different devices.
  • Ensuring it’s easy to use, so that healthcare professionals can focus entirely on the medical intervention and not on the technology.

Avaya videoconferencing, a high quality open solution

However, during development viewLAB was faced with a major challenge, as Med&Home Director José Antonio Gutiérrez Mendiguren explains. “We recognised that our solution was missing a basic and fundamental element to provide an even better service. We wanted to facilitate external communication and interaction. That was only possible using the two-way communication offered by videoconferencing.”

At first, Med&Home looked for a videoconferencing service provider, which could act as partner. But after a lot of searching, they were unable to find anything suitable: instead, they decided to integrate videoconferencing technology into the viewLAB solution.

“We began analysing the different videoconferencing solution providers on the market and quickly decided on Avaya. It was the most simple, complete, reliable and mature solution and offered the best quality on the market,” says Gutiérrez.

“Avaya offers high-def inition videoconferencing via any type of device: “a desktop computer, a smartphone or a tablet,” he continues. “It can be used in an Internet café, the airport, from home or from a hotel, as well as in the hospital. That means professionals can connect and actively participate in what is going on at the hospital, no matter where they are.”

“We wanted one single provider who could guarantee that the project would work, a provider who could offer us a single comprehensive structure for what we were requesting: a room and desktop conferencing system, mobile devices, the entire network structure. That single provider was Avaya.”

“Their price-quality ratio is the best on the market, and they offered us a simple and robust infrastructure that is fast to roll out, cheap to maintain and can be expanded according to our needs.”

Simple to use and Integrate

Avaya’s MCU Elite 5110 service has been fully integrated into the viewLAB solution, and allows up to 10 participants to be connected in high-resolution or 40 in standard resolution. The Avaya Scopia XT1200 has been incorporated into the viewLAB equipment at the hospital, but Med&Home plan to soon upgrade to the XT4200 version, which uses the H.264 High Profile and H.264 SVC standard. This will improve broadband performance and image quality.

Flexibility and adaptability at minimum cost

The hospitals currently connect to the Med&Home infrastructure and register as if they were terminals on their own telephone switchboard. Med&Home therefore becomes the videoconferencing provider. The solution guarantees connectivity – something that hospital networks on their own may not be able to deliver.

“Thanks to Avaya’s business partner, we were able to roll out the service and infrastructure in a virtual room, where everything worked perfectly,” states Gutiérrez. They advised us on the most suitable solution and the equipment to use. We were able to integrate it into our viewLAB solution, which gave us access to a virtual room in which we tested its operation and solution with our clients. Crambo’s support was crucial to the project’s success.”

“viewLAB has integrated all the diagnosis video sources produced in this unit in one single technological solution, so that we can send and view the interventions we perform anywhere in the world. It is just like being in the operating room even though we are not.”

– Dr. Rafael Ruiz Salmerón, Director, Virgen Macarena Hospital in Seville

The future is already here

“Today, the videoconferencing service as part of our viewLAB solution is a reality. The Santiago de Compostela Hospital and the Macarena Hospital in Seville are both actively using the technology. It is already part of daily life,” Gutiérrez confirms.

These two centres are university hospitals so the videoconferencing solution is being used to help teach their students, as well as to actively participate in many scientific conferences, providing real-time videos of what is happening in the operating and interventional rooms at minimum cost.

Fundamental to the solution’s success is its ease of use. Using a simple touch screen, located in the interventional room itself. “It is very easy to integrate the videoconferencing service into Med&Home’s viewLAB solution, explains Gutiérrez. “Individual surgeons are responsible for the facility and they can decide what is viewed and sent, and with whom it can connect. They can switch between different views and offer up to four images, in HD, at the same time.”

Dr Rafael Ruiz Salmerón from the Virgen Macarena Hospital in Seville is a regular user and highly satisfied. “viewLAB has integrated all the diagnosis video sources produced in this unit in one single technological solution. We can view and send the interventions we perform anywhere in the world. It is just like being in the operating room, even though we are not.”

For Dr Ramiro Trillo from the University Hospital of Santiago de Compostela, there are different benefits. He travels almost every month to different Latin American countries to take part in complex interventional procedures, and says “thanks to videoconferencing I can be in permanent contact with my colleagues, preparing for the trips, which allows me to make the most of my time in the field.”

Med&Home is currently working on the possibility of conducting clinical sessions by videoconference, between first line or leading hospitals and other dependent centres within healthcare systems. “As a result of this collaboration between specialists, patients will benefit from better treatment. Videoconferencing facilitates the sharing of knowledge and better care without the need for travel or added costs,” José Antonio Gutiérrez concludes.
