ITE develops info-comm course module 50% faster using Avaya technologies

The Institute of Technical Education, Singapore (ITE) was established by the Singapore Ministry of Education in 1992 as a post-secondary educational institution. ITE has three colleges: ITE College Central, ITE College East and ITE College West. The institution provides students with technical skills and career development support. It also develops national occupational skills certificates and standards to enhance the competitiveness of Singapore’s workforce.

Challenge

ITE offers students 96 full-time courses and 30 traineeship courses in a wide variety of disciplines, including business studies, nursing and electronics.

In 2010, the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore released survey results that highlighted a need for more skilled unified communication (UC) technicians in the Singapore workforce. In response to these results, in January 2011 ITE launched a new course in info-communications technology. The course has eight modules, teaching students to install, configure and maintain web and media applications, servers and browsers.

To enhance the training offered to students in its info-comm course, ITE wanted to partner with a UC technology vendor that would provide the institution with best-in-class IP telephony and UC equipment and software. ITE also wanted to improve the skills and qualifications of its teaching staff and provide its students with detailed, best practice teaching materials.

“Communications technologies have evolved in the past years from old-school telephones to email, videoconferencing and data communications systems,” said Dr. Yek Tiew Ming, Principal, ITE College West. “There is a clear need for trained technicians to set up, manage and maintain unified communication systems.

“By partnering with a leading industry vendor, communications students and teachers can keep pace with rapid changes in the global economic and technology landscape.”

Solution

In January 2012, ITE chose Avaya to help it develop a Unified Communications Technologies Centre at ITE College West. ITE engaged Avaya Connect Platinum Partner Jebsen & Jessen to deploy a range of Avaya solutions for training purposes, including Avaya Aura Solution for Midsize Enterprises, Avaya G450 Media Gateway, Avaya Desktop Video Device, Avaya 1040 Video Conferencing Solution, Avaya Ethernet Routing Switch 4548GT, Avaya one-X Communicator and Avaya one-X 9611G IP Telephones.

Avaya is also sponsoring two ITE teachers for Avaya Professional Certifications through Avaya University and Avaya Learning Centre, and sponsoring awards for academically outstanding ITE students or graduates.

“We considered several other vendors for the collaboration, including Microsoft and Alcatel-Lucent, but chose Avaya as the company is internationally renowned for its unified communications projects and has a strong focus on training and education,” said Dr Eric Cheung, Director, School of Electronics and Info-Comm Technology, ITE College West. “We were also very impressed by Avaya’s unique Flare technology and mobile capabilities.

“The Unified Communications Technologies Centre provides students with invaluable hands-on training in a highly stimulating, real-world environment. Avaya is also helping us organise technology seminars, conferences, forums and workshops, as well as providing advice on developing new short courses for ITE students.”

Results

Unified Communications Technologies Centre trains 80 students per year

ITE launched its first info-comm course using Avaya technologies in July 2012. The institution will run two courses per year, with 40 students in each course.

The students learn how to set up, configure, test and troubleshoot video, data and VoIP networks and application services. Equipping students with a practical understanding of these technologies will ensure they are fully prepared to work as technicians in contact centres and for corporate enterprises that deploy VoIP phones.

“By developing the Unified Communications Technologies Centre using Avaya solutions, we are filling the gap for highly skilled technicians by providing students with the right qualifications, tools and practical experience they need to succeed out in the field,” said Cheung.

“Avaya is well known for its successful partnerships with thousands of educational institutions, so we’re expecting to see a significant increase in course enrolments by the end of the year,” he added. “We’re also planning to offer IP telephony electives and short courses based on the Avaya technologies to reach even more students.”

Train-the-trainer scheme cuts teacher training costs

By offering sponsorships for Avaya Professional Certifications to two of ITE’s teaching staff, Avaya is saving ITE teacher training costs.

“Avaya is training our staff in its new and emerging IP telephony and UC technologies to ensure we can offer students the most up-to-date course materials available,” said Cheung.

The two staff will be certified as Avaya Implementation Specialists in Avaya Aura Communication Manager and Avaya Aura Communication Manager Messaging.

“Certification from Avaya’s university or learning centre shows potential students that our teachers have excellent skills and saves us the cost of training teachers on similar technologies externally.”

Module development time reduced by 50%

Using the newly installed Avaya technologies, ITE developed the IP telephony module for its new info-comm course in three months 50% faster than previous technology modules.

“In the past it’s taken us around six months to design and develop similar modules,” said Cheung. “Using the resources from Avaya, we completed this course significantly faster, as all the required technology was already at hand.”

ITE has also been using resources from the Avaya Connect portal to speed up course development time and enrich course modules. The portal is designed to support Avaya partners and customers by providing e-books, product manuals, online training and discussion forums.
“Avaya Connect contains invaluable information, advice and support on a variety of UC and IP telephony topics,” said Cheung. “Accessing these resources and sharing information about our projects with the Avaya community has really improved our course modules and teacher training, which benefits students and teachers alike.”

Avaya implementation two to three months faster

By leveraging the Avaya technologies on its legacy infrastructure, ITE saved time and costs on its new Avaya implementation.

“Avaya partner Jebsen & Jessen helped us integrate the new Avaya UC and IP telephony solutions on our existing Avaya Call Management S8300/G700 system,” said Cheung.

“By integrating the Avaya technology so easily with our old system, we reduced the implementation time by two to three months.”
