Fabric Networking Empowers Fujitsu to Become One of Germany’s Largest Data Centre Operators

When Fujitsu chose to consolidate a number of its data centres at its production site in Augsburg, the objective was to make long term cost savings and prepare for future requirements and services. To reach this goal Fujitsu knew that it needed a new network that would provide greater levels of reliability and flexibility. By leveraging the Avaya Virtual Enterprise Network Architecture, Fujitsu has solved this problem and created an innovative standards-based network topology that supports high levels of automation in its production environment and laboratory networks. This approach is enabling Fujitsu to optimise utilisation and make its data centre services much easier to manage and scale. As a result, Fujitsu has now become one of Germany’s largest data centre operators.

With a strong manufacturing base in Germany, the company knows that this location and the “Made in Germany” seal of quality are critical to its success. At its Augsburg plant alone up to 12,000 workstations and 1,000 servers roll off the production lines every day. It’s one of the most modern and advanced in Europe – a claim that was well supported when it took over the Japanese parent company’s server production within just three days of the 2011 earthquake in Japan, and it’s more recent Bavarian Quality Award for the excellence of its R&D and production.

Building on its success, Fujitsu wanted to consolidate a number of its data centres at the Augsburg site. Primarily it wanted to save costs and help the company prepare for future capacity requirements. To make sure these objectives were achieved, Fujitsu put Avaya network virtualisation technology at the heart of its strategy.

Successful Consolidation

Following the consolidation programme Fujitsu is already reaping the benefits.

In the medium term, the computer manufacturer is hoping to save around 20 to 30% of the operating costs of its data centres by adopting this approach. In addition, the consolidation is also set to contribute towards improving quality and achieving the greatest possible reliability in terms of data transfer, which will also help it deal with requirements for the security, availability and energy efficiency of data communications that are growing all the time.

The adoption of virtualisation as a strategy has been the key to the approach. “We’re working on achieving 80% virtualisation in our data centres,” says Robert Mayer, Senior Director of IT Governance & IT Infrastructure Management, Fujitsu Technology Solutions. Avaya Fabric Connect technology, together with Avaya Virtual Services Platform, is paving the way. At the network core, a Virtual Services Platform (VSP) 9000-based Avaya Switch Cluster provides the necessary reliability and stability, while products from the VSP 7000 and Ethernet Routing Switch 5000 ranges guarantee the required flexibility in the data centre environment, as well as sufficient bandwidth for the server aggregation.

The Avaya network components enable 10 Gigabit Ethernet connections and are future-ready to support the 40 and 100 Gigabit Ethernet connections in future. “Thanks to the VSP 7000 series, we can set up high-performance fabric architectures that enable non-blocking and non-latency traffic between high-speed storage and server systems,” explains Michael Grundl, who is responsible for Avaya’s networking solutions in Germany.

In comparison with line extender systems, fabric architectures enable considerably more efficient data transfer with scaling far beyond the limits of even 100 Gigabit Ethernet. “This is an enormous advantage considering the private cloud architectures that many companies strive for,” says Grundl.

New Levels of Reliability and Flexibility

It’s not just conventional company applications that are controlled in the Fujitsu data centre in Augsburg, but the entire production and logistics operations as well. “Like in the car industry, we continuously rely on automated production, flexible processes and working time models,” explains Albert Knoll.

This approach reduces costs and drives needs-driven production. In Augsburg for example, this means changing a production line takes just 30 to 45 minutes, allowing Fujitsu to respond immediately to individual customer requests, system reconfigurations, design requirements, or orders. “We simply can’t afford any transfer faults or downtime,” explains Albert Knoll. This was another factor in the company’s decision in favour of the Avaya network solution, which delivers with recovery times of less than 20 milliseconds if a network node fails.

“In 2011, we became the first company nationwide to implement the VSP 9000 in active operation,” comments Albert Knoll. However, it wasn’t too much of a headache for the persons responsible.

The advantages of the new technology also far outweighed any possible risks. A VSP 9000 core network node is based on high-availability technologies that have proven their worth over many years, and is therefore extremely resilient. At the same time, the Avaya Fabric Connect technology offers Fujitsu unprecedented flexibility in terms of network configuration. “Our network has to be 99.99% reliable, yet at the same time be flexible enough to respond quickly to new data centre and production-related requirements. We managed to achieve the impossible thanks to Avaya,” continues Albert Knoll.

Working closely with the Avaya implementation partner, Fujitsu also developed a virtual routing concept that meets the requirements of a carrier network without the loss of any flexibility or dynamism. This innovative network architecture separates company applications, the laboratory network and the data centre, thus enhancing data communication speed and security.

“The data traffic from production, the development centre and the office environment is controlled by separate network cores,” explain the partner’s Project Managers. This ensures that the required bandwidth is always available in the respective local area network (LAN), but also in the wide area network (WAN).

A Strong Partnership Approach

The project has proved to be a great success – particularly now that the standardised virtualisation technologies deployed facilitate any configuration adjustments required. “Previously we often needed a lead time of up to six weeks for network changes; today we can implement similar tasks within a few days,” says Albert Knoll. What’s more, Fujitsu can carry out all changes itself, whereas previously the responsible service provider usually had to be involved.

“Our objective was a completely uninterrupted migration,” says Albert Knoll. He believes the success was due above all to the seamless interaction of all individuals involved in the project.
