New Campus Inspires Technology Upgrades

Martinsburg, West Virginia – Blue Ridge Community and Technical College (Blue Ridge), located two hours west of Washington, D.C., is focused on career entry, university transfer, developmental education, and workforce development. The school recently moved its 3,800 students to a new, state-of-the-art 55,000 square-foot building. Taking advantage of the relocation to upgrade its telephony system, Blue Ridge installed Avaya IP Office, which provides unified communications to help keep the main and satellite campuses seamlessly connected.

According to Michael Byers, vice president of IT for Blue Ridge, “We had a Nortel phone solution, and the Avaya IP Office allowed us to cost-effectively migrate from that legacy system.”

Blue Ridge deployed Avaya IP Office and Avaya digital handsets on each of the desks in its new building. IP Office supports an additional 25 phones at the school’s two satellite campuses – the Tech Center and the Morgan County campus. In all, more than 100 faculty, staff and administrators leverage the new communications system.

“We’re able to replace the legacy phones on our own timeline, which is a huge advantage from a cost perspective,” explains Byers.

The Avaya partner was also instrumental in the successful deployment of the IP Office. “The partner did a really good job meeting our timelines. As parts of the campus construction were finished, the partner implemented the phone system in that part of the building,” says Byers.

Increased Flexibility, Ease of Use

“The biggest benefit of the IP Office is its flexibility. We can support digital phones, IP phones and analog Avaya conference phones.”

Byers explains, “We have the flexibility to configure many different types of call paths and program the system to meet our needs.”

Moves, adds and changes are also easier with the Avaya IP Office. Byers notes that all employees were able to keep their existing extension when they moved to the new main campus location. And when the Morgan County satellite campus came online, installing Avaya IP phones was seamless.

In addition, Byers finds the administration utility for IP Office 500 much more user friendly.

Room to Grow
