University of San Carlos Revitalizes Network Performance with Avaya Engagement Solutions

03 Dec 2015
SINGAPORE, 2015 – Avaya, a global leader in business communications software, systems and services, today announced that its team engagement solutions have been deployed by one of the leading universities in the Philippines, the University of San Carlos (USC), to enhance network performance, improve user experience and reduce network downtime
Situated in Metro Cebu, USC is one of the top ten universities in the Philippines with history dating back to 1595. As one of the busiest universities in the nation, it has over 30,000 students - almost a quarter of them from outside the Philippines – participating in undergraduate and graduate programs.
USC needed to refresh its infrastructure to remain at the forefront of contemporary education in its pursuit for the latest in science, technology and the arts and support growing trends in e-learning and Bring Your Own Device (BYOD). With 40 percent downtime and severe network congestion in the University’s old network, staff and students were often not able to access class materials which limited class progress and performance.  Tackling sluggish speeds, frequent congestion and regular downtime was a top priority in the university’s plans to revitalize the network infrastructure while enhancing user experience.
The new technology fundamentally changed the way USC teaches and engages students and connects classrooms. With the deployment of Avaya Fabric Connect and the Avaya IP Office™ Platform, USC was able to simplify configuration through network automation, improve campus network bandwidth by 10 times from 1 gigabyte to 10 gigabyte and ensure 1 gigabyte connectivity to the desktop. Students can now use high-bandwidth applications such as virtual learning classrooms to improve cross-campus collaboration. Students and staff can also depend on a more reliable user experience. The university is also among the first few customers in the Philippines to deploy the Avaya Wireless LAN 9100 Solution with 135 units integrated across four campuses. The deployment will deliver stable application performance to mobile users even under heavy network usage, enabling staff and students to enjoy a higher capacity WiFi network and enhanced support for their mobility and collaborative needs no matter which part of the campus they are on.
Reflecting the greater reliability of the new switches and technologies, Rhea Rowena Rivera, Head, IRM-TNS & HDS, University of San Carlos, commented: “On our old network, we experienced downtime and severe network congestion at the most important times. Now, availability is over 90 percent and staff and students are satisfied with the network speed at all times.”
Avaya Fabric Connect enabled USC to streamline the network topology, accelerate network configuration and remove single points of failure – allowing the IT support team to troubleshoot in real-time via a centralized platform. This means greater efficiency in providing support and services without the need to comb the campus infrastructure to make upgrades, configure new applications and devices or determine the cause of a fault. The drastic improvement to network performance and reliability meant that students and staff can spend more time focusing on active learning and their pursuit of academic achievements.
“The skillsets and technological requirements of the ‘Connected Student’ vastly differ from what it used to be. In today’s new Era of Engagement, schools need to have a robust and reliable network solution that will allow students and lecturers alike to benefit from the latest teaching and learning tools such as virtual classrooms to the sharing of online resources. Avaya is committed to supporting the staff and students of USC in their pursuit of academic success through the provision and innovation of cutting-edge network and engagement solutions”, said Edgar Doctolero, Country Director of Philippines, Avaya.
