Avaya is helping connect people, places and devices to deliver a flawless communications experience at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games

Delivering World-Class Performance

From February 12th to the 28th, Avaya equipment handled the combined networking needs—voice, video, and data—of the 2010 Winter Games. Connecting 15 venues across challenging, rugged and remote terrain, the network served the needs of 5,500 athletes, 10,000 media representatives and 25,000 volunteers.

Building Games' First All-IP Network

As the Official Converged Network Equipment Supplier, Avaya worked with Bell to deliver the first ever all-IP network for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games. Over 3,000 technology and telecommunications specialists, along with countless volunteers and sponsors, built and maintained an infrastructure that encompassed:

  • 15,000 VolP phone and fax lines
  • 7,000 mobile phones and 2,000 PTT
  • 5,000 radios
  • 4,000 TV drops
  • 500 wireless access points

The massive bandwidth required dwarfed the needs of all previous Olympic Games—and Avaya equipment gave Bell a flexible and cost-effective approach for managing it.

Bringing Vancouver to the World

This network was crucial to delivering the news, scores, sights and sounds of the Games to its worldwide audience. Thanks to Avaya, 3 billion TV viewers in 160 countries got to experience the games as never before. It was an historic, flawless performance worthy of the Olympic Games.

Ahead of the Pack in Sustainability

The system designed for the Olympic Games has proven to be one of the most efficient and sustainable network equipment solutions ever deployed. Avaya data solutions deliver up to 40 percent in energy savings over comparable industry equipment. And although much of the equipment was installed for the large, one-time event, approximately 98 percent of the total deployment will remain in place at the venues, be refurbished and repurposed for other deployments, or disposed of in a sustainable fashion through end-of-life e-waste programs.

This forward-thinking design has earned Avaya the Sustainability Star awarded by the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Learn more about this award.
